Domain & Hosting FAQ
Domain
1. What is Domain Name?

[BestEast] In computer networking, a domain name is a name given to a collection of network devices that belong to a domain which is managed according to some common property of the members or within a common administrative boundary. In particular, the term is used to describe the regions of administrative authority within the Domain name system used for the Internet. The domain name is mapped to an IP address (which represents a physical point on the Internet).

2. Why register the domain name?

[BestEast] The domain name is like a trade mark on internet. Once you have the domain name, people can find you on Internet.

3.How long does it take to register a domain name?

[BestEast] It normally takes about 24 hours or less, once the registration is transmitted to an authorized registrar.

4. What is the difference between .com, .net, and .org?

[BestEast] ".com" names were originally designated for commercial (for profit) organizations or individuals but now are typically used for any purpose. ".net" was originally for network providers, but can now be used for any purpose, commercial, non-profit, or personal. ".org" was originally designated for non-profit organizations or groups, but now can be used for any purpose, commercial, non-profit, or personal. ".edu" is for 4 year, degree granting colleges/universities ONLY.

Hosting
1. What is Web Hosting?

[BestEast] Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that you may publish your web site online. You can either opt for free hosting that is usually supported with banners and pop ups, or may opt to get paid web hosting, which gives you complete control over your site contents.

2. What is Virtual Hosting?

[BestEast] Also known as shared hosting, this form of web hosting should suffice for most everyone. Virtual hosting simple refers to the fact that your site is on one server, and that this server hosts mulitple sites. You are virtually shared - your site will not be the only one on this specific server. Very few sites would actually need the power of a dedicated server, so this option provides to be a reliable and cheap solution.

3. What exactly is space and bandwidth/data transfer?

[BestEast] Disk space is the size your website can be. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on your web host's server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but it is the extra images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space. Bandwidth/Transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site to send in a month. Transfer is usually measured in gigabytes - billions of bytes. Once you go over your monthly limit, a host may either shut your site down for the remainder of the month or it can charge you 'overage.'

4. Do I have to change my domain if I get a new host?

[BestEast] No. Provided that the domain is registered in your name (as it should be), you can simply update your name servers (from where you manage your domain names) to that of your new host.

5. What is the difference between UNIX hosting and Windows hosting?

[BestEast] Depending on which operating system to go with depends on your needs. If you need to support Microsoft products such as ASP, MS Access, or VBScript, then Windows hosting would be better. Furthermore, if you are comfortable with IIS and do not have the time to understand how UNIX works, Windows hosting would again be a better choice

6. Why don't I just go with the cheapest hosting?

[BestEast] A host has to make a profit to continue operating. Some hosts do not properly understand the market, and may be pricing themselves too cheap.

1. How is a web page different from a MS word or text document?

[BestEast] HTML (Short for HyperText Markup Language) is the language used to create web pages. A web page may contain text, graphics, audio or even video. A web page may link to other web pages or files by using hyperlinks. One big benefit of a HTML is that the language is understood by any computer with a browser, and Internet connectivity irrespective of the Operating System used.

2. Do I need to know HTML to design a simple web site?

[BestEast] No. It is not necessary to know HTML to design a simple web site. You can use GUI (Graphical User Interface) editors such as FrontPage, Netscape composer, or Mozilla to create a web page. 4. What is JavaScript? Is it required to develop a web page?

[BestEast] Not necessarily. Scripts are used to execute special code either on the browser or on the web server. A script such as JavaScript or VBScript that runs on the browser is called client side script. A script such as CGI or PHP that runs on the server side is called server side script. For example, if you want a feed-back form to be incorporated into a web page, you may need to resort to scripts. Basically, scripts introduce functionality into a web page. Some examples where scripts are used: Discussion forums, web page counters, feed-back forms etc. If you are considering any interactivity with the web page visitor, you may need to consider using a script.

5. Which script is better? Server side or client side?

[BestEast] The advantage of client side scripting is that the server is relieved of executing the script, thus saving valuable processor time and RAM. On the other hand, there is less protection to the script on the client side. Script on the server can be protected using passwords, whereas the script on the client side is open to anyone. Server side scripting is recommended if you need a tight control on the program code, better functionality, and security.

6. Give me examples of server side scripts, and client side scripts.

[BestEast] ASP, PHP, JSP and ASP.NET are examples of server side scripts. JavaScript, and VBScript are the examples of client side scripts. Note that scripts are interpreted languages, and differ from programming languages such a Java or C++. The later are compiled before being executed.

7. Is there any optimization of a web page required for compatibility with different browsers?

[BestEast] Yes, it is recommended to optimize your web site with respect to various browsers.

If an engine has dropped your rankings considerably since last report, it is time to tweak your META tags or check the optimized pages for any problems.
